Top 10 Clash Royale Tips For Beginners

Posted by Flashing Room on Wednesday, March 2, 2016

Clash Royale is a mashup of a collectible card game. It’s the latest game from Supercell, the ones that brought you Clash of Clans, and it uses the same characters that we’ve all come to know and love.
Here’s our top 10 tips for beginners who are just starting out in the game:

1. Don’t Spam The Cards

Elixir management is a major part of this game. If you don’t have elixir, you can’t spawn new cards on the field. So be careful and considered in what you place and when. Let your bar fill up first so you can see what your opponent is going to do, and deploy countermeasures where necessary. Nothing is worse than being out of elixir and staring down the barrel of a Skeleton Army.

2. Mix Up Your Deck

Having all high power cards in your deck may seem cool, but not when it means waiting 20 seconds between deploying cards. Keep a couple low elixir cards in your deck so you can always have ways of stopping a Prince charge, stalling a Skeleton Army, or back up your successful push on a tower.

3. Combine Your Troops

No one troop is the best in this game… but there are lots of awesome combinations that do a lot of damage. So figuring out good combinations of troops is key based on your cards. Test out deploying multiple troops at once, or in different orders, and build out your deck with these combinations in mind. There are a lot of strategies here, and the game is constantly evolving. We will cover many Clash Royale Strategies later on.

4. Spawn Near The Back of the Field

You don’t always need to spawn your troops near the front. Sometimes it’s good to spawn your troops near the back of the field so you can have more time to combine multiple cards. Also, in the early game, while you wait for your opponent to play a card, you can buy yourself more time by playing a low-cost card near the back of the field.

5. Spend Less Elixir Than Your Opponent

It might sound obvious, but it’s something to think about with every card you play. When your opponent plays a card, you can react with a cheaper card to stall the attack while your towers finish him off. Or sometimes you may not even want to spend any elixir on a troop to defend and just let your tower take a little bit of damage instead to give you a leg up on your next attack.

6. Defense Is A Good Offense

Being reactive in Clash Royale can be a good thing. If your opponent throws a Prince card at you, react with a skeleton army once he nears your base. If he tosses a Goblin Barrel at you, lay down some Arrows before it lands to prevent them from doing much damage. If a Barbarian horde is coming, answer with some cheap little minions. If you can consistently defend against your opponent’s armies by using less elixir than he does, you will have a big edge when your window opens to push an attack.

7. Offense Is A Good Defense

Sometimes it’s fun to be the guy the others have to react to. So plan your attacks wisely and your opponent won’t have time to attack you since he’ll be busy defending. Throw down a skeleton bomber behind a Knight, and watch him clear the way for you. Or use a Giant as a meat shield while you deploy tons of Spear Goblins and Archers behind him to rain pain on anything ahead. Everybody knows that you throw down a Skelly Army to stop a Prince. But if you play your cards right you will have some Arrows ready to deploy to eliminate them as soon as they spawn, leaving your Prince to go all ‘guided missile’ on that undefended tower.

8. Watch TV Royale

Want to see what the best players in the game are doing, what cards they are using, and how they are combining them? Watch TV Royale replays to learn new techniques as the game’s meta is constantly changing and evolving.

9. Don’t Upgrade Things You’re Not Using

You should be saving your gold as much as you can and not wasting it by upgrading cards you aren’t playing with. Every 24 hours new cards become available to buy with gold, and you never know when that Epic card you’ve been waiting for (i.e. Xbow) will come up for 2,000 gold and you will be oh so happy you saved for it. You’ll get more gold and experience by donating your cards anyway once you join a clan. Which leads us to our last tip…

10. Join A Clan!

Not only is it fun to be in a clan, but you also receive to donate and receive cards which is a very fast way to level yourself up and enhance your deck’s power. Plus, just like in Clash of Clans, we are sure that soon there will be clan wars and lots of interesting loot and rewards from participating in those.
So there are our top 10 tips for newbies in Clash Royale. Don’t give up, even if you are on a losing streak. Learn from your mistakes, think of how to change your strategy to defend against different attacks. If you can’t get a Skeleton Army or a Dragon card early on, don’t fret, there are ways to defend, I promise. As you skill grows your trophies will too.
